We want all of our citizens to be able to use our services and join in with the life and work of the city. We want to make sure no one loses out because of who they are or the life choices they make. Equality is about everyone having access to
- services
- jobs
- housing
- leisure and culture.
We have set the following three equality outcomes for the year ahead (2025):
- Outcome 1: People with communication needs find it easier to engage with Council services through improved approaches to communications across the organisation.
- Outcome 2: People in Edinburgh feel more confident reporting hate crime and victims of hate crime are supported.
- Outcome 3: People in Edinburgh are aware of the impact of the climate and nature emergencies on their needs and understand what support is available to them.

As part of the council’s statutory duty, we must publish our interim equality outcomes and the final Equality and Diversity framework report for 2021-25 by April 1 2025, both of which are listed above.
Testing our services
Before we make decisions about our services, we look at evidence to see if there could be any good or bad effects on
- people’s equality and human rights
- sustainability and the environment.
We then think about how to improve the service. This is called an impact assessment. The tool we use is called an integrated impact assessment (IIA). View our impact assessments.
